Above, is the excitemeter. The bar below the colours, with lines, is the
indicator of how excited us and the gamers are about the game. The higher
the bar goes into the higher colour zones, the more excited I am about
the game. Also, remember that it is important how much the bar goes
into that colour. This adjusts the rate of what I have written in the colour
descriptions at the bottom.
Don't expect many games to get RED
or ROSE though... these would be games
that qualify HEAVILY in these 3 zones.
1. How great the game is shaping along to be.
2. How excited we are about the game.
3. How hyped the game is in the media.
Of course, this does NOT mean that any game that gets PURPLE
or VIOLET won't be great - in fact,
these two areas are reserved for games that are going to be stunning and
very playable.
This also means that games that get less than the higher colours does
NOT mean they won't be great... it could just be the hype, our impressions
or people might just not be excited enough about the game.
A great example is the two Zelda games on the N64. Ocarina of Time would
have got RED in this bar, but even
though Majora's Mask improves upon it in every respect, it would still
get ROSE or PURPLE,
maybe even VIOLET.
Just remember... only those games that will rock the world will get
RED,
and that's if it impresses me thoroughly.
BLAND BLUE 'Is this
really being made by Nintendo's 1st/2nd party?'
An absolute disappointing-looking of a game that lets down the Gamecube
and its own respect. Hopefully this colour won't pop up for any previews
on the 1st, 2nd and N3rd party games.... ever. |
BLUE 'A game that makes
you wonder why, just why?'
A game that looks to make you feel betrayed, that lets down the power
of Gamecube and the team of Nintendo's close developers. Only expect this
colour to be used very direly, or even never hopefully... |
NAVY 'Not so good so
far... games that seem average and nothing special.'
An average-looking game that's a let-down, but delivers enough of the
right stuff to not make it a disaster. Don't expect anything amazing from
these games, they are those games that make you wonder why it can't be
looking better than it is. |
DARK NAVY 'An OK-looking
game... but nothing extraordinary about it.'
A qualifying game that has good ingredients that make up for some flaws.
These could be visually stunning games that fall behind in some areas and
make you hope it will be tweaked a little better. |
VIOLET 'A worthy-looking
game, but not bad nor outstanding in most aspects.' A good game
that has the right stuff. It succeeds in most aspects and has something
special that makes it great, and could well turn out to be one of those
surprises. Something worthy to look foward to. This could be a game with
the right stuff but not much hype, whether it's unoriginality or something
not so exciting. |
PURPLE 'A game that
makes you happy it's only coming to Gamecube.'
A great-seeming game. This game has the potential to stand out significantly,
and has some great stuff . Don't expect this colour to be that common,
these are the games that look to succeed, and to look foward to. Hype could
be lacking here. |
ROSE 'Wow, a game that
you probably just can't wait for.'
A look-to-be masterpiece. A ground-breaking-looking game that could,
when released, give enough reason to purchase the machine by itself. This
game has to have incredible gameplay and innovative ideas. These are the
games that look to be one of the best game in the genre when it is released,
and something extraordinary. |
RED 'Possibly a sequel
of an amazing game that keeps everyone anticipating.'
A game that amazes and stuns the gamers and excite them until the very
day the game comes out. This game looks to be one of the best games in
the genre on any platform, the game that sets a benchmark, may take a while
to be upped by another game, and sets a quality that may not be able to
be achieved by any developer. Obviously, this title has to be incredibly
hyped and set to rock the gaming world - the only N64 games that qualified
in all these areas and created incredible hype and would-get this colour
before they were released would be Super Mario 64, Zelda 64 and possibly
Perfect Dark. This colour would almost certainly have to be a sequel of
some kind, and that means the prequel must have been amazing. |
The 10 Things that Count in an
ExciteMeter - Every One of Them is Important
The Game: How great does
the game look and how great does it play?
How great the overall game is looking regardless of past, developer,
hype, etc. This means games with improvements over an NGC prequel will
get credit here.
The Hype: How excited
are the media and the gamers' about this game?
How much the media and the gamers are anticipating the game. Majority
of the hype could be because of a long development span, short supplies
of copies, etc.
Me!: How excited am I
about this game?
How excited I am about the game. Also,I might
find something of the game very exciting or find certain things that make
me wonder why they couldn't do it better.
The Developer: Who's developing
this game?
How much of the gamers' trust lies in the developer.
Obviously, a same game would be much more hyped if an amazing developer
made the game instead.
The Prequels: How great
was the prequel/last-generation of this game?
How great the last-version of this game was,
how hyped it was, and what impact it made. If a game had a solid prequel,
it will obviously be more hyped & vise-versa.
The Franchise: Is the
game part of an amazing franchise or something with a dodgy past?
The trust and love that lies in the franchise.
If the franchise has been revolutionary all the way, or this could count
for a great, improved game over a crappy franchise.
The Time: How long has
it been since we have been waiting for this game?
How long the game took to get to the stage it
is. This could be a game that last appeared on a far-back generation or
a game that has taken years in development.
The Competition: How does
this game stand up against the competion in the genre?
There could be a great-looking game that by the
time it comes out, it won't have much over the competition, whether it
be on Gamecube only or other platforms.
Soul: Has it got that
special deep feeling or a just polygons with no life?
This is a very important part of a game - is
it just polygons that look like objects or is it a game that has life and
draws you into it? Soul adds depth to the gameplay.
Innovation/Originality/Revolutionionary:
Is it something totally revolutionary or cloned? This
can be very, very important. A game that revolutionizes the gaming
world will get much more hyped than a rehash of an amazing game with improvements.
Remember, HYPE plays a big role in the ExciteMeter. There could be
a great-looking game that is nothing new, or a great game that no-one is
really excited about. This means that if a game is a sequel of some kind
to an amazing game, it will be more hyped and therefore get a higher EM.
Some of my explanation may be a little exaggerated, and some of you
may feel inaccurate about my opinions when I rate the EM's.
Remember that it is important how much the bar goes into that colour.
This adjusts the rate of what I have written in the descriptions above.
